CHESS MATE

New Chess Champion Dominates in Mexico
Viswanathan Anand of India is the new world champion.
Anand, the world’s top-ranked player, won the World Chess Championship in Mexico City that ended yesterday. He dominated the 14-round event, winning four of them and losing none through Round 13.
This is the second time Anand has been world champion. In 2000, he won the World Chess Federation’s championship, held in Tehran and New Delhi. At the time, however, there was a rival claim for the title, and Anand was not universally acknowledged as champion. This time is different. The title was unified last year, and there is only one champion.
In Mexico City, Anand was in deep trouble only once, in Round 13 against Alexander Grischuk of Russia, but he squeaked through. Throughout the tournament, Anand demonstrated superior preparation and resourcefulness compared with his competitors.

What is not obvious in that video is the fact that the billboard which represents the anorexic girl is not a poster for a campaign that fights anorexia.... IT IS AN ADVERTISEMENT for a clothing brand... Nolita. What a shame!

About immigration in the U.S.

Discovering Angel Island: The Story Behind the Poems

From 1910 to 1940, tens of thousands of immigrants entered the United States through the West Coast's Angel Island Immigration Station. Located in San Francisco's north bay, not far from Alcatraz Island, the buildings were nearly forgotten and their history practically lost, until one day Alexander Weiss, a California State Park Ranger, re-discovered them in 1970. His chance discovery began the long journey to save the Immigration Station, and ultimately, to save the stories hidden within it, and to help us remember its sad, but important role in American history.

Shakespeare. Sonnet #38

READ IT ! (Don't worry if you don't understand.)

How can my Muse want subject to invent,
While thou dost breathe, that pour'st into my verse
Thine own sweet argument, too excellent
For every vulgar paper to rehearse?
O, give thyself the thanks, if aught in me
Worthy perusal stand against thy sight;
For who's so dumb that cannot write to thee,
When thou thyself dost give invention light?
Be thou the tenth Muse, ten times more in worth
Than those old nine which rhymers invocate;
And he that calls on thee, let him bring forth
Eternal numbers to outlive long date.
If my slight Muse do please these curious days,
The pain be mine, but thine shall be the praise.

LISTEN TO IT NOW

READ IT AGAIN BUT ALOUD THIS TIME

"The rights we enjoy in the West today, from the basic right to vote in elections to freedom of conscience, were won in a series of hard-fought struggles over five hundred years.
The triumphs and sacrifices of these hard-won victories should make us value these precious rights even more highly, especially in an age when democratic governments under pressure sometimes find it necessary to restrict rights in the name of freedom."

Moon Landing ...?

The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apollo programs, and the third human voyage to the moon. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.

The mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's goal of reaching the moon by the end of the 1960s. In a 1961 speech he had proposed - "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the earth".
-Wikipedia-

The radio broadcaster on this YouTube (really addictive) thinks/believes Apollo 11 did land on the moon but obviously, those who did that video don't think so nor believe it. Read their arguments!Listen to the debate. What do YOU think?

"Mother Teresa an atheist" or a saint?

A few years ago, "Le monde Diplomatique" had a headline on its last sociological page reading:" Mother Teresa, a media saint"
Il y a quelques années, le Monde Diplomatique avait titré en dernière page, page sociologique:
"Mère Theresa, sainte médiatique"

This week,in the Guardian:
http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/andrew_brown/2007/08/was_mother_teresa_an_atheist.html
And also this video posted on YouTube last december which shows a very interesting interview from a former nun, "an ex-nun on the run" who used to be in one of Mother teresa's the nuneries / facilities.
Et aussi cette video postée sur YouTube en décembre dernier et qui montre avec une interview d'une ancienne soeur "une ex-nonne en fuite" qui était dans l'un des couvents / établissements de Mère Teresa très intéressante.

Dr Dino and creationism

You've probably heard about the prehistorical museum that exhibits men with dinosaures.
But you might not have heard of Dr Dino:
excerpt from Wikipedia:

Kent Hovind, is an American evangelist and Young Earth creationist. He is most famous for creation science seminars, many of which have been taped and widely distributed. His seminars, which often make use of humor, aim to convince listeners to believe in creationism and to reject evolution. Hovind's views are criticized by the scientific community and even some fellow young earth creationist organizations like Answers In Genesis (AIG) criticize Hovind for "persistently us[ing] discredited or false arguments".

Hovind is currently serving a ten-year term in Federal Correctional Institution, Edgefield in Edgefield, South Carolina for 58 tax offenses, obstructing federal agents and related charges.

Hovind established the Creation Science Evangelism Ministry in 1989 and, before his incarceration, frequently argued for Young Earth creationism in his talks at private schools and churches, at university debates, and on radio and television broadcasts.

And here is a fun (though quite rude video)criticizing him.
This video contains a spelling mistake. Will you find it and post it in the comments?
I mean WHO WILL?

Buffet blasts system that lets him pay less than secretary

June 28, 2007

Warren Buffett, the third-richest man in the world, has criticised the US tax system for allowing him to pay a lower rate than his secretary and his cleaner.

Speaking at a $4,600-a-seat fundraiser in New York for Senator Hillary Clinton, Mr Buffett, who is worth an estimated $52 billion (£26 billion), said: “The 400 of us [here] pay a lower part of our income in taxes than our receptionists do, or our cleaning ladies, for that matter. If you’re in the luckiest 1 per cent of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99 per cent.”

Mr Buffett said that he was taxed at 17.7 per cent on the $46 million he made last year, without trying to avoid paying higher taxes, while his secretary, who earned $60,000, was taxed at 30 per cent. Mr Buffett told his audience, which included John Mack, the chairman of Morgan Stanley, and Alan Patricof, the founder of the US branch of Apax Partners, that US government policy had accentuated a disparity of wealth that hurt the economy by stifling opportunity and motivation.

Time to go home...

Those who start wars, never fight them
And those who fight wars, they never like them
And those who write laws, can recite them
And those who fight laws, they live and die by them
But I know its time/ Yes I know its time / {It's time to go home X4}
{Don't take our boys away / Don't take our girls away }
Those who build walls are pretending
That forever they can defend them
Those who dam streams can build fountains
Those of us who just let them run free
Can move mountains
And I say, you whoooo
you whoooo who who who, you whoooo who who who
Doves fly by in the morning light
Leaves fall down on a passer by
Phone call comes and a mamma cries
Tears stream down from a daddy's eyes(X2)

EN RAPPORT AVEC LE TEXTE ETUDIE:
"A Breath of Fresh Air"
Contrary to its title, the text deals with a stifling and deadly atmosphere.
The characters are desperately but in vain trying to have a breath of fresh air.
A toxic cloud is looming instead.
DECEMBER 3, 1984
Shortly after midnight poison gas leaked from a factory in Bhopal, India, owned by Union Carbide Corporation. There was no warning, none of the plant's safety systems were working. In the city people were sleeping. They woke in darkness to the sound of screams with the gases burning their eyes, noses and mouths. They began retching and coughing up froth streaked with blood. Whole neighbourhoods fled in panic, some were trampled, others convulsed and fell dead. People lost control of their bowels and bladders as they ran. Within hours thousands of dead bodies lay in the streets.

Yes... tough. And the sites below are tough to watch then you might choose to go straight to the petition.

The frontier / the new frontier

“We stand at the edge of a New Frontier—the frontier of unfulfilled hopes and dreams. It will deal with unsolved problems of peace and war, unconquered pockets of ignorance and prejudice, unanswered questions of poverty and surplus.”

cf WIKIPEDIA: John F. Kennedy’s New Frontier program was intended to boost the economy, provide international aid, provide for national defense, and to boost the space program.

Aujourd'hui, on parle aussi d'Internet comme d'une nouvelle frontière et les U.S. veulent retourner sur la lune!
